it depends on what kind of dog you get. If you go to the shelter there are dogs that needs families and are compatible with kids. Some small dogs don't like children, because kids sometimes play rough and they get hurt easily.

You just need to properly socialize the dog and teach the child how to safely interact with the dog. I agree that small dogs sometimes are not the best with kids because of being small they feel they need to "fight" back towards rough play. A shelter or rescue would be your best because they can tell you which dogs are good with kids and which are not. Also puppies sometimes are not the best because they do not know how to "act" so sometimes an adult (2+) would be the best way to go. Still a young dog but wise enough to know how to act.

I grew up with dogs and my kids did too. Good training for the dogs and making sure kids don't aggravate, startle, or hit the dog will also help.
